Samsung’s 200MP cameras are about to crack a lucrative market

Samsung has a thriving components business through which it sells everything from displays, batteries, camera sensors, memory chips, and more to other smartphone makers.

The company has made great strides in camera sensors, it has the world's first 200-megapixel telephoto sensor to its name as well, and now it appears that Chinese smartphone makers are about to adopt it in droves.

Rumor has it that some of the leading Chinese smartphone makers will begin widely adopting the 200-megapixel ISOCELL camera sensors from Samsung in their flagship phones. The company's lineup of sensors includes the HP3, HP5, and the HP9 telephoto.

We've already seen a couple of Chinese smartphone manufacturers use the HP9. It's present in the Vivo X100 Ultra and the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. The sensor performs very well on these devices and the manufacturers' software works well with the hardware to extract great performance.

What's noteworthy is that there isn't a widespread adoption for Samsung's range of 200-megapixel cameras by the company's own smartphone division. We do find them in some top-of-the-line devices but there's still considerable depth within its own lineup for this sensor to be utilized.

Samsung's strategy in recent years has been to take it slow with major camera upgrades, even for its flagship phones. The company's focus on refinement and extracting every bit of performance from existing hardware before moving on is in stark contrast to Chinese manufacturers who appear to be going for shock and awe on their phones' spec sheets.
