Sony’s New Software Tool Will be Able to Detect AI-made Images

Sony recently announced that it’s been working on “Camera Verify,” a new tool under its Camera Authenticity Solution platform. The feature is currently under beta, and works by sharing image authenticity using a dedicated URL. The company says that the feature focuses on weeding out AI-generated images which are often passed off as authentic.

Sony’s Camera Authenticity Solution uses C2PA ​(Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) digital signatures alongside Sony’s proprietary 3D depth information directly into the image at the moment of capture. This then feeds information about an image’s authenticity that can be verified on the Image Validation site.

With Camera Verify, organizations such as media outlets can share URLs of images with embedded digital signatures, which when viewed by third parties will let the latter know of an image’s authenticity. The Digital Signature License is now available for purchase via the Creators’ Cloud website. Sony adds that it plans to expand support for video content later this year.
